Google’s Motorola buy seen boosting Android in workplace

With the closing of Google’s $12.5 billion acquisition of Motorola Mobility this week, talk of the possibilities for Android in the enterprise has spiked.

While Android has taken the consumer market by storm — the OS runs 59% of smartphones shipped in the first quarter of 2012 — IT managers remain wary that maintaining security and control of consumer Android devices devices used by workers may be difficult if not impossible, according to various surveys.

Microsoft Wins Patent Suit Against Motorola Android Handsets

Technology giant Microsoft claimed victory as the International Trade Commission issued its final determination in Microsoft’s Android infringement case against Motorola, ruling Motorola violated a Microsoft patent related to ActiveSync, a mobile data synchronization technology and protocol developed by Microsoft, originally released in 1996. The technology is licensed to a number of mobile device companies, including Apple for iOS.

New releases of Android smartphones are happening each week. All four major carriers in the United States are going to launch at least one unit in the weeks to come (that’s a lot of phones IMO). With 4G right around the corner and mobile hardware and software getting better and better, you should take a look at what’s coming down the pike in the next couple of months before you buy. Here are some of the upcoming Android phones this summer and I hope that you will like some of my choices.

1. Motorola DROID Bionic

The DROID Bionic was one of Motorola’s darlings at CES this year. After that, news on the powerful device fell flat. Rumors suggest Motorola went back to the drawing board and redesigned the phone. That seems to be the case as this leaked Best Buy ad for the Bionic shows.

Android to Top 40% Market Share in 2011

Android will command 40 percent market share through 2011, with growth tapering off to 44 percent by 2015. Apple iOS currently has 18 percent, RIM nets 14 percent and Nokia Symbian is at 20.6 percent and falling.

Google’s Android mobile-operating system should exceed 40 percent share of smartphones worldwide, with Samsung, HTC and Motorola leading the way with handsets based on the open-source platform, said IDC.
