Google Glass is no iPad

The consumer electronics industry has gotten pretty boring lately. That’s not to say the new products that have debuted recently are boring, but we’re definitely in a period marked by iteration. Each new smartphone closely resembles the smartphone that came before it, each new tablet is a tweak and a spec bump away from its predecessor, and Windows 8 hasn’t reinvented the PC like we had hoped. The timing couldn’t have been better for Google to shake things up with Google Glass, the curious connected eyewear that willlaunch next year. But is Glass really the next big thing or are we all just so bored that anything seems like a breath of fresh air?

Not long after the iPhone came out, skeptics questioned how much appeal the costly device and related wireless service would have in countries like China with lower income levels. On Tuesday, Apple provided the answer: A lot.

The company reported Tuesday that soaring sales of the iPhone, especially in China, helped Apple nearly double its profit in the company’s fiscal second quarter.

Netflix app updated for iPad’s Retina Display, with HD streaming

Netflix is the latest big-name app to get the Retina-treatment for the new iPad. In addition to higher-quality images throughout the app, Netflix says that version 2.1.1 has fixes for VoiceOver, AirPlay, and stability. What Netflix doesn’t say but is readily apparent after you load the update is that it seems faster overall. Netflix’s official Twitter account brings better news: proper HD video streaming is “to follow later.” That’s one way to get to the limit of your LTE plan, we suppose.

Rumors from Apple: iPhone 5, iPad 3 this October

Apple’s next-generation iPhone will launch in the third quarter. And the company plans to ship 25 million units by year’s end, according to a report.

Apple is telling suppliers to produce enough of the phones to meet a goal of 25 million units by year’s end. By comparison, Apple said it sold 18.65 million iPhones in the fiscal second quarter, which ended March 26. The initial units will ship to assembler Hon Hai in August.
